Michael Straarup Mielec (Visiting doctoral student in Hokkaido University from Aarhus University, Denmark) receives the Best Presenter Award at ICLEE 2024

At the 14th Conference of International Consortium of Landscape and Ecological Engineering (ICLEE) held at Kyushu Institute of Technology, Michael Straarup Mielec, a visiting doctoral student from Aarhus University, Denmark, was awarded the Best Presenter Award for the presentation of his
preliminary research in collaboration with Professor Junko Morimoto of the Ecosystem Management Laboratory of Hokkaido University.
The award is given to the five best presentations and five best posters at the conference.

The award was given for the presentation of the study titled “Rewetting Low-lying Riparian Crop Soils – Implications for Ecosystem Regeneration Over Time”. The study investigates the succession of vegetation on rewetted and restored wetlands on formerly intensively farmed crops in Denmark. The study assesses the effect of environmental factors and soil chemistry, time after rewetting (5-22 years) as well as the management practices implemented after restoration. Contrary to expectations, time after rewetting did not significantly explain the variation in biodiversity metrics, which were instead explained by management type, with ungulate grazing significantly increasing plant species richness and diversity in restored wetlands.
